Rape Happens Every 20 Minutes in India

Women activists in India calling for stiffer sentences for perpetrators of rape after rape rate in the country increased rapidly.

Based on data from the Government of India, the country's rape occurs every 20 minutes. Ironically, when the number of rape or sexual abuse increased, the number of offenders who received punishment is decreasing.

In the past year there have been numerous cases of rape which attract attention of many parties. One of the most tragic cases occurred in the State of Haryana, last November.

This event happened to Shubnam, a 16-year-old girl, who was raped eight young village. More pathetic again, the assailant was brutal scenes recorded using their mobile phones.

When fathers rape daughters Shubnam know events have spread across the country, he committed suicide, unable to bear the shame.

Haryana is a state of the farm where the men still dominate daily life. For most people of Haryana, family honor and avoid shame necessity is a matter of life and death.

And usually, Indian women rape victims are often reluctant to be named. However, Shabnam different. He just wants the world to know the terrible events that happened to him because he said many victims like him and he did not want to fall victim again.

"I do not want to sacrifice my father's life to be in vain. I decided to punish them all so that what happened to me will not happen the other people," said Shubnam.

Shubnam physical injuries in the attack was recovered. However, his mother, Rani, daughter worried psychological scars will never disappear.

"My daughter fears and depression. Because he rarely spoke a lot of fear in his mind," said Rani.

The increasing number of rape and sexual harassment in Haryana shows what is happening in almost all states of India.

Most of the people in India still prefer boys than girls so that female infanticide and female feticide is prevalent. In Haryana there are recorded only 830 girls compared to 1,000 boys.

Women activists Rishi Kant said, the problem is rooted in Indian society.

"Because of these problems, female infanticide and female feticide plural case,"
Rishi said.

"Due to the limited number of girls, boys often do these crimes and the perpetrators of rape should go on trial with a lightning proportionate punishment for them," said Rishi.

Indian women activists say the laws protecting women in the country is actually more than enough. It's just so far supportive policies and retribution is lacking is applied.
